How to Manage and Filter Free Company (FC) Chat in FFXIV
In a busy Free Company, the chat log can quickly become overwhelmed. Whether you need to focus on a difficult raid or simply prefer a quieter “General” tab, Final Fantasy XIV offers robust tools to customize your social experience.
Method 1: Hiding FC Messages in an Existing Tab
Use this method if you want to remove Free Company chatter from your main “General” or “Battle” tabs without creating new windows.
- Open Settings: Open the System menu and select Character Configuration.
- Access Log Settings: Select Log Window Settings (the chat bubble icon at the bottom of the left-hand column).
- Locate Filters: Under the General tab, scroll down to the Log Filters section.
- Select Your Tab: Click the button for the specific tab you wish to edit (e.g., General, Log 2, or Log 3).
- Filter the Chat: Navigate to the Chat sub-tab and uncheck the Free Company box.
- Save Changes: Click Apply. Messages from your FC will no longer appear in that specific tab.
Method 2: Creating a Dedicated “No-FC” Custom Tab
This is the ideal solution for players who want to keep FC chat available in one tab while having a “clean” tab specifically for Dungeons, Raids, or Party communication.
- Create the Tab: Click the + (plus) icon next to your existing chat tabs to generate a new custom tab.
- Rename for Clarity: Right-click the new tab and select Rename (e.g., “Party Only”).
- Configure Filters: Go back to Character Configuration > Log Window Settings > Log Filters.
- Customize Content: Select your new tab and check only the essential channels (such as Party, Say, or Tell) while leaving Free Company unchecked.
Pro-Tips for Chat Management
- Create Floating Windows: You can click and drag any chat tab out of the main window. This allows you to create a separate, permanent chat box on your UI specifically for private messages or party alerts.
- Muting Notifications: If you want to keep the text but find the notification “ping” distracting, go to Log Window Settings > Notification Sounds. Here, you can uncheck the sound for Free Company without hiding the text itself.
